September 15, 1997 Melbourne Z Meeting!!

曇ってはいたけど、アデレードを出発。
Although it was cloudy, I left Adelaide.

マーガレット、ラックサッカーズの宿泊客たちに見送られて、マシンをメルボルンに向ける。
Margaret and the guests at Lacksacker’s saw me off as I headed for Melbourne.

海沿いを走って、グレート・オーシャンロードからメルボルンへ入る予定だったが、およそ距離にして940km。
I planned to ride along the coast and enter Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road, which is about 940 km.

天候が不安定だったので最短ルートで行くことに。
Due to the unstable weather, I decided to take the shortest route.

とはいっても、アデレードからメルボルンまでの距離は700km。
Even so, the distance from Adelaide to Melbourne is 700 km.

おまけに、山間部を走っているので寒い。
Moreover, it was cold as I was riding through the mountainous area.

海沿いも寒いんだろうけど、南の山間部はムチャクチャ冷える！
It would be cold along the coast too, but the southern mountainous area is extremely cold!

着込めるだけ着込んだってのに、ハンドルを握る手は感覚ナシ。
Even though I was wearing as much as I could, my hands were numb while gripping the handlebars.

途中、ガソリンスタンドでホットティーを飲んだりチョコレートをかじったが効果がない。
I drank hot tea and nibbled on chocolate at a gas station along the way, but it didn’t help.

南極から流れてくる風のせいだろうか？
Maybe it was the wind coming from Antarctica?

多分、この旅の中で一番寒かったように感じた。
It probably felt the coldest of any point on this trip.

もーさっさと行っちゃえとか思ってたら、何とスピード違反でとっ捕まってしまう！
Just when I thought I should hurry, I got caught for speeding!

「許してちょー」と言おうとしたら、警官はすでにレーダーからオーバーしたことを証明するレシートみたいなのを引っ張り出している。
I was about to plead, “Please forgive me,” but the officer was already pulling out a receipt-like document proving my speed from the radar.

どうやら30kmオーバーだ……
Apparently, I was 30 km over the limit…

冗談じゃない、こんな所で捕まってたまるか！
No way, I can’t get caught in a place like this!

それでなくともオレは駐禁やら何やらでこの国の警察には厄介になっている。
I’ve already had trouble with the police here for parking violations and other issues.

だがしかし！シドニーでは、連続強盗犯逮捕の立役者でもある。
But still! I was instrumental in catching a serial robber in Sydney.

身体を張って、犯罪者逮捕に貢献したのよ？
I put myself on the line to help catch a criminal, you know?

でも、きっとそんなのカンケーないだろうな。
But I bet that doesn’t matter here.

違う州での出来事だし。
It happened in a different state anyway.

とにかくオレは英語が出来ないフリをした。
So, I pretended not to understand English.

まさに「おうちーをきいてもわからない、なまえーをきいてもわからない♪」だ。
Just like “I don’t understand when you ask my name or my address♪”.

警官はもうお手上げって感じで、オレは無罪放免。
The officer seemed at a loss, and I was let go.

いやー危ないところだった。
Man, that was close.

オーストラリアはだだっ広くてぶっ飛ばせると勘違いするヤツもいる。
Some people mistakenly think they can speed through Australia because it’s so vast.

事実、オレもそうだった。
In fact, I was one of them.

が、意外にスピード違反や駐車禁止、飲酒運転にはうるさい。
But surprisingly, they’re strict about speeding, parking violations, and drunk driving.

日本の感覚とたいして変わりない。
It’s not much different from Japan.

「ウソー、オレは大丈夫だったぜ」ってのは、単に運が良かったか、ダートばっかり走ってたライダーだけ。
“Really? I was fine,” is just someone who was lucky or only rode on dirt roads.

普通に生活してると、ホント「うわー、駐禁切られてる！」なんて日常茶飯事。
Living normally, getting a parking ticket is a common occurrence.

なにしろ、日本を離れ、わずか10日足らずで切符切られたし（笑）。
After all, I got a ticket less than 10 days after leaving Japan (laughs).

ある意味、日本よりも厳しいかもしれない。
In some ways, it might be stricter than Japan.

寒さと疲労に鞭打って、メルボルンのユースに到着したのは夜７時過ぎ。
I pushed through the cold and fatigue, arriving at the youth hostel in Melbourne just after 7 PM.

よくも、この寒さの中、700km以上も走り通したものだ。
I can’t believe I rode over 700 km in this cold.

肩はこるし、背中は突っ張る。
My shoulders were stiff, and my back was tight.

んなもんだから、荷物おろして、メシ喰って、as soon as バタンキュー（死語）である。
So I unloaded my luggage, ate dinner, and crashed as soon as possible (old-fashioned term).

翌日、アデレードの名物バックパッカーズ、ラックサッカーズで一緒だったタマキ、ナオコとメルボルンのユースで再会。
The next day, I reunited with Tamaki and Naoko, who I had met at the famous backpackers Lacksacker’s in Adelaide, at the Melbourne youth hostel.

そのまた旅仲間と、メルボルンの街を見て回る。
We explored Melbourne with their travel companions.

実は半年前にF1観戦で数日間滞在したこともあり、物珍しさはなかった。
I had stayed here for a few days six months ago for the F1 race, so it wasn’t all that new to me.

それに、メルボルンもオーストラリア随一の大都会。
Also, Melbourne is one of Australia’s biggest cities.

トラムや歴史的な建造物はあるにせよ、都会はどこも似たり寄ったり。
There are trams and historical buildings, but cities are similar everywhere.

オーストラリアが誇る大自然には敵わない。
It can’t compare to Australia’s magnificent nature.

それにしても、この辺り、夜はあんなに寒いくせに昼頃は、わりと暖かい。
Even so, this area is quite warm around noon, even though it’s so cold at night.

「こんなに暖かいんだったら、グレートオーシャンロードを経由してくりゃよかったな」
I lamented, “If it’s this warm, I should have come via the Great Ocean Road.”

と、ボヤいたら女性陣から是非行きたいと要望が。
When I complained, the women insisted they wanted to go.

レンタカーで一緒に行こうと誘われた連中からドタキャンを食らって、ガッカリしてたんだそうな。
They were disappointed because their companions who had invited them to go by rental car canceled at the last minute.

オレとしてもガソリン代をシェア出来るし、たまには4つ輪もいいだろう…
For me, it would be nice to share the gas expenses and try a four-wheeler for a change…

というわけで、何とか4人の面子を集めてツアーを計画。
So, we managed to gather four people and planned a tour.

夜、F1を観に来た時に発見した安くて美味いピザ屋に行ったら、ユースの向かいにある飲み屋に何とZオーナーズクラブの面々が！
In the evening, I went to a cheap and tasty pizza place I discovered during the F1 trip, and found the members of the Z Owners Club at a bar across from the youth hostel!

いやいや、ホント偶然。
What a coincidence.

飲み屋で御馳走になったり、路上でバーンナウト（前輪をロックしてアクセルを吹かして後輪を空回りさせる。タイヤ

が摩擦で溶けだしてモウモウと煙があがる地球に厳しいワザ。当然タイヤもすり減る）を披露してみたりと大騒ぎ。
They treated me at the bar, and we made a big fuss doing burnouts on the street (locking the front wheel and revving the engine to spin the rear wheel, creating smoke from the tires – harsh on the environment and wears down the tires).

ちなみに、ここのクラブが一番ワルそうだった……
By the way, this club seemed the most mischievous…

路上で爆竹鳴らすわ、ホント危ない人たち（笑）。
Setting off firecrackers on the street, they were really dangerous people (laughs).

いい連中だったけどね。　
They were good guys, though.

September 17, 1997 Great Ocean Road

翌朝、ユースでレンタカーを予約してもらい、いざグレートオーシャンロードへ。
The next morning, we reserved a rental car at the youth hostel and headed to the Great Ocean Road.

メンバーは何と全員女性！車の力は偉大だ（笑）。
All the members were women! The power of a car is great lol.

グレートオーシャンロード、有名ではあるが、地図を見てもズバリその名前では書いていない。
The Great Ocean Road is famous, but it’s not explicitly labeled as such on the map.

メルボルンからPrincess HighwayでGeelongに向かい、そこからTorquayを起点としてWarnnamboolまでの約250km。
From Melbourne, we headed towards Geelong on the Princess Highway, and from there, started at Torquay and drove about 250 km to Warnnambool.

これをグレートオーシャンロードというらしい。
This is what they call the Great Ocean Road.

オーストラリアは日本同様、車は左側通行なので、Torquayを出発点にした方が景色は見やすいし、車も停めやすい。
Australia drives on the left side like Japan, so starting from Torquay makes it easier to see the scenery and park the car.

見どころは、Port CampbellあたりのThe Arch、Sentinel Rock、Loch And Gorge、The Twelve Apostlesだと思うので、時間がない人はピンポイントに狙ってもいいかもしれない。
The highlights are The Arch, Sentinel Rock, Loch Ard Gorge, and The Twelve Apostles around Port Campbell, so if you’re short on time, you might want to focus on these spots.

時間に余裕があるなら、この辺りは沢山の国立公園があるので、時間のある旅人だったら、数日間に分けて出掛けるのもいいかも。
If you have time, there are many national parks in this area, so it might be good for travelers with plenty of time to spread the trip over several days.

天気が良かったし、断崖沿いの道を走りながら眺める海は最高の景色。
The weather was good, and the sea view from the road along the cliffs was stunning.

車のCMで切り立った崖っぷちの道を走るのがあるけど、まさにあんな感じ。
It’s just like the car commercials where they drive on roads along steep cliffs.

女性たちも免許を持っていたが、MT5速は誰も運転したがらず。
The women had licenses too, but no one wanted to drive the 5-speed manual.

日本だったらブーたれていたのだが、終日ステアリングを握ってても、車は本当に楽ちんである。
In Japan, I might have complained, but even holding the steering wheel all day, driving a car is really easy.

600km以上も走ったけど、ぜんぜん疲れない。
We drove over 600 km, but I wasn’t tired at all.

とかいいつつ、7時半過ぎに帰ってきたら、結構疲れていた（笑）。
That said, when we got back around 7:30, I was quite tired lol.

ホントならば、暖かい時にゆったりと何日かかけてツーリングするのがいいかも。
Ideally, it would be better to take a leisurely tour over several days when it’s warm.

いまさらだが、メルボルンで少し心と体調を整えて、グランピアンズ国立公園へ足を伸ばすなど、内陸部の景勝地を訪ねてみるべきだった。
In hindsight, I should have spent some time in Melbourne to rest and visited scenic inland spots like Grampians National Park.
