Dedicated to The Overlanders Steakhouse

around the world

Once upon a time, when the yen was the most powerful force in the world…

Facebook

The iconic Overlanders Steakhouse in Alice Springs has closed its doors for good.
The well-known restaurant opened in 1971 and had been on the market for a while.
Manager Jenny Schrader told ABC Alice Springs that despite the fact there was someone keen to buy the business, the sale didn’t go through on time and the decision to close was made.
Schrader says it was a very hard decision to make.
“It’s not a reflection on the town. We chose to not renew our lease,” she said.
“Mark and I have put our heart and soul into it. It was a beautiful chapter in our lives.”
Schrader says they will now begin selling off the furniture and memorabilia.

The iconic The Overlanders Steakhouse has closed its doors and all its Centralian memorabilia, tales, chair, crockery, cutlery and more is for sale — if anything is still left to sell.

Business owners Jenny and Mark Schrader had heavy hearts and a tear in their eye when they closed the doors on the restaurant for the final time on Saturday night.
They had been the “caretakers” for the restaurant, which was officially opened in 1971, for almost three years.
“We decided a year ago that we were not going to renew our lease for the building which expires on March 14,” Mrs Schrader said.

“We tried had to sell it and had some interest but in the end there was no buyer.
“So everything has to go from the cutlery, the memorabilia and even Wayne’s (Kraft, the former owner) wine collections.

“It is a fire sale so we will accept any reasonably priced offer.
“”Everything that is not fixed to the floor or a wall has to be moved.
“We have had a fantastic three years in the restaurant and there are so many tales to tell.
“They include a European gentleman who dined in the restaurant 20 years ago and brought his children back for the experience.
“A tour company that regularly comes here when in Alice Springs wanted to book this week but we had to say no.
“And there is a WA business couple who come to Alice Springs every couple of weeks and always come to dine here, whether it is just the two or a group of 10.”

Mrs Schrader believes that The Overlanders Steakhouse has been turned around from being mainly frequented by tourists, especially on coach tours, to be a preferred restaurant for the town.
The signature dishes for the restaurant, prepared Mr Schrader who is a chef, ae damper, stuffed mushrooms and beef ribs made on the premises.
But they will be no more.
The Schraders had to let six staff go when they closed on Saturday including one who had been employed at the restaurant for 20-plus years.

The “everything must go” sale includes the saddles on the beams and rails, the Lords Taverners collection and the portraits of historic characters by Jenny Cook.

The closure of the restaurant will be a blow to the as it lessens the choice of stand-alone restaurants to dine at.

It could impact on the Alice Springs Masters Games as the restaurant was asocial gathering place at the end of the day that helped create the reputation of “The Friendly Games”.
